Home Remodeling Case Study: A Brighter, More Connected Home—Designed for Real Life
Rethinking Layout and Light to Create a More Connected Home for This Ann Arbor Family
Homes evolve alongside the people who live in them, but this Ann Arbor home hadn’t kept up.
The kitchen was small and closed off, tucked into a tight galley layout that made cooking feel cramped and isolating. Entertaining was difficult, and everyday routines required more effort than they should.
Beyond the kitchen, the home felt disconnected. Living spaces competed rather than complemented each other, and natural light wasn’t being fully utilized. The layout simply didn’t support how this family wanted to live.
They knew something needed to change—more than just cosmetics. The family needed a thoughtful, guided approach to reimagine the entire flow of their home.

Our most recent project in 2023 was a primary suite bathroom renovation. While we were onsite, we extended the project to also replace the original, drafty, and inefficient living room windows and repaired some ceiling damage in that room.
Each project offered a unique opportunity for our team to take this family’s home to the next level. From the initial kitchen upgrade to the recent primary suite and living room renovations, we witnessed their home evolve into a space that not only meets their practical needs but also resonates with their style and personality. Let’s dive in!
What Changed
1 kitchen relocated
Moved from a closed-off galley into the former living room to maximize space and natural light
2 main living areas transformed
The former kitchen and dining room became a spacious, welcoming living room
1 bedroom repurposed
Created a baker’s dream "back kitchen" from an unused bedroom, complete with dedicated space for trays, tools, ingredients, and two full-size ovens
Multiple openings added
New windows and sliding glass doors improved light, comfort, and energy efficiency
0 sq. ft. added
The entire transformation happened within the home’s existing footprint—resulting in a hardworking layout designed for serious baking days and effortless everyday living.
The Challenge
At first glance, the home didn’t seem outdated; it just didn’t work.
The kitchen was functional but isolated, making it difficult to cook, connect, or entertain. The surrounding spaces lacked cohesion, and the layout created natural barriers between everyday activities.
On top of that, the family had specific lifestyle needs—especially a passion for baking—that the existing layout simply couldn’t support. Their old layout couldn’t support the way they live, create, and gather. Our team helped them reimagine what was possible.
Meadowlark's Approach
Rather than focusing on surface-level updates, Meadowlark took a step back to understand how the family truly lived in their home.
From there, the solution became clear: rethink the layout entirely and let the home’s natural light and flow guide the design.
By redistributing space—not adding to it—the team unlocked new possibilities within the existing footprint.
Reimagining the Layout:
-
Relocated the kitchen to a brighter, more open area of the home
-
Removed walls to improve flow and connection
-
Reassigned underutilized spaces to better serve daily life
Designing for Real Life:
-
Created a highly functional main kitchen for everyday use
-
Designed a dedicated “back kitchen” for baking and prep, complete with two full-size ovens (with a third in the main kitchen)
-
Incorporated thoughtful storage for tools, trays, and ingredients
Enhancing Light and Comfort:
-
Installed new windows and sliding glass doors
-
Improved natural light throughout the home
-
Hidden storage for pet supplies
-
Eliminated drafts and increased energy efficiency
Adding Personality and Joy:

-
Selected Lightology statement pendants to bring warmth and character
-
Balanced functionality with delight in everyday spaces
The Transformation
By rethinking the layout (not adding square footage) Meadowlark completely changed how the home works.
The house that once didn't have enough room, now feels larger, brighter, and far more functional.
Before:
-
Small, closed-off galley kitchen
-
Disconnected living spaces with poor flow

Limited natural light in key areas
- No dedicated space for baking or entertaining
After:

- Expanded living room designed for gathering and comfort
