Functional, cleanable surfaces are a chef’s best friend. The materials used in countertops, tables, and other eating and cooking surfaces make a world of difference when it comes time to clean a messy kitchen.
When searching for durable and easy-to-clean surfaces, consider natural granite, man-made quartz, or wood as great choices.
Since granite is from the earth, it has a variety of hues (from neutral tans and blacks to vibrant blues) and striations, giving each slab the ability to declare uniqueness—no two stones are formed the same. It also can be polished to a shiny finish or honed to a matte or leathered finish. Beyond aesthetics, granite is long-lasting and easy to clean, provided that is has been properly sealed.
Wood brings warmth and nature along with a ton of functionality into a space. With the patina that comes from age and the occasional treatment of mineral oil, wooden counters will become a distinctive sign of a well-loved kitchen. Quartz is a manufactured product made by combining 90% ground natural quartz with resins, polymers and pigments. This results in a very hard granite-like surface that is easy to clean and maintain and does not have to be regularly sealed like natural granite counters. Because is it a manufactured product – it comes in a multitude of colors and patterns.
