Hi! My name is Amy Etz and I am a new designer at Meadowlark. I was born and raised in St. Clair, Michigan, which is mostly known for hosting the Riverfest Boat Races. My childhood home is located on the St. Clair River, and I have very fond memories of living on the river with my parents and two sisters. We caught fish, took rides on the pontoon boat, skipped rocks, but not very much swimming took place (it was still the St. Clair River). My outdoorsy childhood has a lot to do with my passion for biophilic design. “What in the world is biophilic design?” you ask. It is an approach to architecture used to connect people with nature. Biophilic designed homes incorporate things like natural lighting and ventilation, natural landscape features and other elements for creating a more productive and healthy built environment for families. In an increasingly urbanized and virtual world, it is important to our well being to design our indoor spaces to reflect the outdoors since we have such a strong draw to nature as biological creatures. Biophilic design strategies can be as simple as incorporating some indoor plants to something as impactful as adding solar tubes for sunlight. From time to time, I enjoy visiting little ol’ St. Clair, Michigan. “Once a Saint, always a Saint,” as they say. However, nature is my ancient home, which I long to be reminded of on a regular basis.
