When we first visited this kitchen, it was difficult to talk to the homeowners in the space. The 80’s white laminate cabinets blocked the beautiful view of outside and made the kitchen dark. It was difficult for more than one person to be in the kitchen, and the flow for cooking was similarly uncomfortable.
Similarly the laundry room and garage entry had an awkward flow and arrangement of cabinets. The living room, while spacious, had white walls and very little visual relief. The greenery outside the sunroom looked out of place and didn’t enhance the room.
Our clients travel to Italy frequently to see family, and had developed an affinity for both the modern design of Milan and the rustic nature of Tuscany. They wanted their kitchen to remind them of both, two styles that are not easily combined. Working with our clients and designer John Sprentall, we developed a pattern of materials and design that would reflect both. Hand-troweled plaster walls and rustic tile on the floor, walls and fireplace surrounds, created a rich texture that wonderfully melled with the modern aesthetic created by the shaker-style monochromatic cabinets and black horizontal lines. Stainless steel fixtures and appliances lend a hand to the modern appearance.
Opening the kitchen to the eat-in bay window dining area brought lots of natural light into the kitchen, while the warmth of the stone and built-in cabinets in the living room invited the greenery outside the sunroom to be a part of the interior.
We also specified several custom hardware and cabinetry features that helped with their cooking styles. Everything is within easy reach and cooking is an experience that is almost as good as the results.
This remodel transformed our clients daily living experience to reflect how they live. Their glass collectables are well-lit and occupy spaces that would otherwise be empty. There is an easy flow to the rooms that is comfortable and familiar. All of the small things were thought of to make daily tasks easy. Best of all, from every angle, the home has pleasing views and a casual elegance.
