Geothermal Heating and Cooling

Ground source heat pumps (GSHP's) use heat from the earth to heat and cool a home, and to provide hot water. A few feet below the surface, the earth maintains a constant temperature of around 50 degrees year round. This becomes a nearly infinite heat sink from which we can swap energy from summer and winter temperature extremes at the surface.

These simple systems draw heat from, or add heat to the fluid circulating through tubes installed in the ground, depending on the season. While expensive to install, GPHP's typically result in energy bills that are a fraction of the cost to heat and cool a home in the conventional fashion. GSHP's also do not directly add to carbon dioxide emissions as they are electrically powered. Geothermal HVAC installation coupled with tight construction, passive solar design, and renewable power generation together can achieve what a house in our area is capable of: a zero-energy, carbon-neutral home.
