Our Design Process - Exterior Porch Replacement

Original Condition:
This porch was in a severe state of disrepair and needed immediate attention. The owners had beautifully landscaped the front yard and wanted a porch that would do justice to the rest of their yard and lovingly restored house.
Some design elements desired were:
  • Some sort of pillar arrangement
  • A place to put potted plants
  • A picket arrangement for under the deck

It is also discovered that the porch is poured concrete over gravel and dirt. Excavation and disposal will be necessary to remove the existing porch.

A line drawing case study:
Line drawings can be produced fast. For this porch, there were many competing ideas, and we needed a direction to go in before spending time on details. The following series helped narrow that focus.

Original Condition

A basic balustrade and column design

With Brick Pillars

Frame and panel pillars are chosen
with the original round columns
cut down and reinstalled

Adding 2 pillars with no columns
adds texture and gives a surface
for potted plants.
