Our Design Process - Built-In Cabinet Case Study
The owners of this house wanted to update these cabinets and brighten up the space. A light wood that matches the bamboo floors is desired. Some of the problems to be solved were:
- Not enough space to properly store the items used in this area
- The house is modern style - the Owners were concerned that the cabinets should reflect the style of the home
- The clutter and cords are not conducive to good organization - more cabinets that have doors are necessary
- The construction and installation of the existing cabinets wasn’t great - Owners were looking for long-term, well constructed cabinets.

Design/Development Process:
- The client was interested in design and worked with us to produce the piece desired. Symmetry was important, as well as having the functions needed for the family.
- Flat panel drawers in ash wood are modern looking and light. The color and texture matches the floor well
- Better lighting is needed - our design program allows us to model lighting in the room
- Granite is chosen for the counter material on the desk unit - it needs to be dark with the right texture to compliment the ash cabinets.
- Electronics connection for A/V, computer, and office equipment needs are necessary - connections should be hidden.

The shelf unit is extended around the corner. A 3-D walkthrough is necessary to make sure that the space is big enough to accommodate the added size. After virtually walking through the space it is determined that the size will fit well in the room.
A focal point is needed to make the corner of the bookshelves feel right. A change in shape from rectangular with a pendant light draws attention to this area without detracting from the unit as a whole. A decorative item will warm up the room in this area.
Should the counter surface be granite or wood? Wood is chosen based on the renderings shown. Rendering can be a powerful tool in making detail decisions!
The Finished Product:
- The electrical junction box is downsized considerable and made accessible. A small accent picture hides it
- The granite is chosen carefully for this counter surface. The color and texture of the ash and the granite compliment each other very well!
- The desk cabinet has a fax machine, computer and internet accessories, stereo components, art supplies for the kids, and a large file cabinet. Only the phone and TV are visible on the surface
