Our Design Process - Addition to a House
|
The Owners of this house needed to expand the upstairs with an additional bedroom for
their growing family. The logical place to expand was in the back corner shown here.
|
|
|
The first step of design and development was to look at how an additional bedroom
would change the roofline, and see how floorplans could be changed.
|
|
Although these clients initially didn't have plans for the space
underneath the upstairs bedroom, we saw a unique opportunity for
this area. We mutually came to the conclusion that this would be
a great transition area between their house and their nicely
landscaped yard. These line drawings fleshed the ideas out in a
way that is quick to draw.
|
While this building project had already started in order to make the upstairs
bedroom ready as soon as possible, there was still no clear direction for the
area underneath. To preserve future options, we recommended that these
clients install radiant floor tubing underneath an insulated concrete slab.

The line drawings showed the beginnings of a space that could work well.
It was decided that renderings might further define colors and shapes.
|

|
|
The first design choice was two French doors with flanking windows. This would make the
French doors swing into the room, and sliders were preferable for the space. The second
design choice was a logical next step. It was decided to build both this room and the deck
outside.
The end product is an area that flows gracefully from the house into the back yard
with a 4 - season room and a deck that occupies an area that was too steep to be
of use before. On nice days the house can be completely open to the outside yet
private and inviting. Good lighting creates an outdoor atmosphere that makes
this area ideal for summer nights.
